Plectrology  History

When the FLATPICK-L mailing list was born in December 1995, a few projects got started right away. One was "Who's who" and another involved a compilation of flatpicked music performed by list members. The production job was bestowed upon Chief Noda, and Bo Parker was Tape Graffiker I. Music was sent in from seventeen list members and a set of two 90-min tapes was distributed in July, 1996. The tapes were received with enthusiasm throughout the world. Over two hundred copies were eventually distributed. Plectrology II was done in 1997. The set included forty one contributors, 101 tunes in three 94-min tapes and a booklet (done by PlectroGraffikker II, Dave Guertin). Again, more than two hundred copies were distributed.  Plectrology III, issued in 1998 originally on three CDs. Later, a fourth disk was added to the compilation. Again, Dave Guertin took care of the graphics work on the original three CDs, Harry Moore joined the team as "Plectro-Errand Boy" and did the graphics on the inserts for the 4th CD. Plec I, II, III, and IV are no longer available in their original format, although Plec I and II have been reissued in MP3 form on a bonus CD that is included with Plec V.

The latest project, completed in March 2003 is appropriately called Plectrology VII.  Your Plectrology VII Production Team has been:

Compilation & Master by Chifuru "Chief" Noda
Graphics for CD by Harry Moore
Public Relations & Distribution by Harry Moore
Booklet and graphics by Wayne Young
        Legal Beagle Bill Bain

Plec VII has 5 Cds full of songs and tunes submitted by about 75 listers from all around the world.  Each submitter sent in a short writeup about the song (i.e., instrument used, strings, picks, why, personnel, etc).

Material on the Plec series is (a) flatpick-guitar instrumentals, (b) flatpicking "other"instrumentals, and (c) singing with flatpick lead and flatpick breaks. There has been a wide variety of tunes on all the Plectrology editions and the diversity has made them more enjoyable. We have had tunes from bluegrass, fiddle tunes, original, swing, jazz, classical, folkie, Bulgarian dance tunes, polkas, Celtic/Irish, Swedish, country and western, and so on. You get the idea - anything goes!

Liner notes discuss (a) songs, (b) instruments, (c) playing techniques and secrets, (d) recording set up, (e) personal notes (biography, dedications, musical influences), (f) anything else. The booklet can also include sheet music and/or tablature.
On-line version of the Plec IV liner notes.
