Vijay - Lead and rhythm guitars and mandolin I've always liked this tune, which I learned in my North Carolina days. I don't hear it around these parts (Texas) very much. The arrangement is pretty much my own. I had fun switching off the lead and harmony parts on the guitar and mandolin. I recorded the lead parts with a Shure SM 57 microphone, and the rhythm with an SM-58. The guitar lead was played out of the open D, while rhythm was done out of C position, with capo on the second fret. Instruments/Equipment:
Keep on the Sunny Side (copyright 1899 by J Howard Entwistle, words by Ada Blenkhorn, last verse by D. Holt and S. Heller) Vijay Barnabas - Lead guitar and vocal Nancy Harrison - Upright bass and harmony vocal Ken Harrison - Rhythm guitar
Fasten your seatbelts, folks, I'm going to subject you to my singing!! I asked my friends Ken and Nancy Harrison to help me out on this one. Nancy is on upright bass and provides the vocal harmony, while Ken plays rhythm. (He declined to take any breaks). This one was recorded "live" with no overdubbing. I pretty much stole this arrangement from David Holt (off his "I Got a Bullfrog" album). The last verse is one he wrote along with Steve Heller. The song is in the key of F, with me playing my Martin out of the C position (capo on the 5th fret, while Ken is playing out of the E position. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that Ken is playing my newest acquisition, a 1950 Gibson L-4 cutaway. Its an acoustic archtop, F-holes, and has a spruce top and maple back and sides, best as I can tell. It's a really cool looking guitar. The Gibson has the wrong strings, (light gauge jazz/electric) but it still has (to my ears anyway) that funky old-time sound. Unfortunately, as I just got this guitar, I don't have pictures of it yet. |
