Songs: Hello fellow flatpickers and musicians! I am really happy our band Western lights, was able to submit some new tunes for this years Plectrology effort. This year's submission includes two songs recorded at a live performance at the first annual Woodland, Veterans Day Festival, November 2000. I am playing my 67 D-18 on all the tunes. From a guitar standpoint I have no lead breaks on either of these two songs but rather feature some of my best (IMHO ) rhythm playing in a western swing style. As time goes on, I get more excited about great rhythm playing all the time. Trouble in Mind is the first song and has been around forever. We recorded it previously on our CD "Favorites of Ours" and it was fun to hear a live recording of it. Martha does a great job singing with help from Melvin on harmony vocals. The fiddle work by Martha and Melvin as well as Mike's mandolin work carries this song really well. Jerry is rock solid on bass as always.
Milk Cow Blues, a classic written by Bob Wills, is one of my all time favorite songs to perform. I sing this one by myself and love the "punch" the guitar gives the song with this style of rhythm. We always really get into the song, as does the audience. To my knowledge, I believe this may be the first version of Milk Cow Blues on Plectrology. The beginning of the recording is not how we actually did the song on stage. One of us didn't care for our intro so we ultimately took advantage of the magic of digital editing to cut it out for our submission here. The rest of the song however was something we really wanted to share with you all. Melvin on fiddle, Mike on Mandolin, and Jerry on bass really get into the old "Milk Cow Blues". As always, a special thanks go to our Plectrology
team, Chief Noda and Harry Moore for their outstanding efforts in
continuing this wonderful tradition. Last but not least, thanks to
all you list members for your music, insights, and fun on the list.
Best Wishes and Keep on Pickin'. |
